For Those Who Live Between the Pipes...

Goaltending Mindset

Find a comfortable stance, be the team's best skater.  All moves have a distinct start and finish. Control all rebounds. Anticipate by seeing people away from puck . Position is key.  Be vocal on-ice; Don't complain off-ice !WORK HARD in practice; HAVE FUN in games. Be active not passive.  Be patient.  If you are in the right place, the burden is on them. They have to find a way to beat you, you don't have to find a way to stop them.  Focus on the present (effort), not the future (results), and most of all BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

Famous Quotes

“How would you like it if you were sitting in your office and you made one little mistake? Suddenly, a big red light went on and 18,000 people jumped up and started screaming at you, calling you a bum and an imbecile and throwing garbage at you. That’s what it’s like when you play goal in the NHL.”          Jacques Plante

“It’s a simple job. You must only watch the puck. If you can see it, you
can stop it.”  Jacques Plante

“It’s pretty tough for a goalie when you look at it. You’re always the last line of defense. If you let a goal in you can’t go to the bench and hide between the guys or anything.”

Kirk Mclean

“It’s not necessarily the amount of time you spend at practice that counts; it’s what you put into the practice.”
Eric Lindros

Defending the Break-Away

Feeling let down because an attacker slipped through your 5 teammates and now you are facing an attacker head on?  Don't feel down, this is your chance to rise up and make a big play for your team!  Hopefully by studying and practicing the tips below, you will feel more confident the next time you are facing a break-away !

  •        Come out of net extra far
  •    Back up when player is approx top of circles
  •      Carrying puck in front; deke likely
  •     Carrying puck on the side; shot likely
  •    Player stops feet & begins glide is sign for ‘move’
  •      Deke is usually done on back-hand side; pad saves!
  •   Watch puck and players chest/midsection
  •     Have patience; make player make the first move (fakes!)
  •     Use stick as an asset but don’t rely on the poke check
